Heng Samrin was born in 1934. He served as political commissar and commander of the Khmer Rouge's 4th Infantry Division from 1976 to 1978. In 1978 he led an abortive coup against Pol Pot, then fled to Vietnam. There he became president of the National Front for the National Salvation of Kampuchea in December of 1978.
